February 25, 2010 – KryptoDEV, a popular MapleStory private server development forum, is soon to make MapleStory history by becoming the first private server development website to be sued by Nexon Inc. Rumors have been flying around since January about problems within the website and a trusted source has told Maple News that the rumors are true. A Canadian law firm is acting on behalf of Nexon America Inc. in the lawsuit against owner of the website, Alex Manov (known as Sparks).

On February 13th KryptoDEV posted a Twitter update in which they admitted the lawsuit was in fact real,

@AkaiMS We have to be careful what’s floating around KryptODEV due to the filed lawsuit, on top of which the features…

KryptoDEV’s database was also wiped after one of their administrators (xcheater) was hacked which debunked rumors that Nexon had already shut them down.

So, over the past few months, it’s been nothing but hell for us. One of our administrators (xcheater) got hacked which turned out by the time I got home from work the entire forum was pretty well wiped, this was not the work of Irwin (x0r) but rather another individual unknown.

Despite the lawsuit KryptoDEV is still up and running. We have not received a comment from either KryptoDEV or Nexon America regarding the lawsuit against KryptoDEV. Please check back for updates as they come.

Nexon’s New Threat…The Net

Posted by kotopros On February - 6 - 2010

Nexon's Eye Nexon, are you ready?

Due to the recent reports about GMS (MapleStory Global), using a new set of codes to launch the game via their website. Nexon might not have noticed… we use Window computers to play MapleStory, not Macs (Apple Computers)!

What do I mean?

Hypothetically speaking, launching Maplestory using a website launcher is like managing your banking/SSN (Social Security Number) without thinking about spy-ware entering your computer, and stealing your data.

Playing MapleStory on the official website is a BIG risk. Nexon really has to step up their protection. The new Hackshield program currently in use wouldn’t do squat to protect us from website-based attacks especially account fraud and keyloggers. Keyloggers are extremely deadly. They can see what you type on your computer and where you go.

Spyware is also a concern. There are tons of websites out there pretending to be official MapleStory websites offering to give you free NX for your account information. In early 2008 there were at least 100,000 accounts hacked due to their owners entering their information on a fake official site. (According to the Maplestory Website Notice in Early 2008)

Nexon and everyone else in the MapleStory community should STOP and think about how this change can affect the safety of accounts. Security must be improved if the web client is to be a success. Just be careful and mindful of URL’s and links and you should be fine. Make sure that when you log in to the MapleStory homepage to launch MapleStory you aren’t on maplestory.nexonn.net.

Is Nexon ready for this big leap? OR am I just insane to bring this up…I don’t know…but tell us what you think.

BannedStory Contacts Nexon America

Posted by Savage On February - 4 - 2010

Last February Ion, the creator of BannedStory, contacted Nexon America regarding the legality of BannedStory and MapleSim (now MapleSimulator.com). Here are the ticket logs of Ion’s conversation with Nexon America customer service representatives.

Thanks to David Kong for the tip. Click here to view the original post on MapleSim.

The following is a discussion held with the Nexon of America staff regarding the use of GMS content inside BannedStory. Way back when Nexon decided to sue anybody who was creating MapleStory-based private servers, I took the decission of contacting them to explain some details about my program and ask if I could continue the development of BannedStory.

This explains why GMS won’t be included in BannedStory.

I do apologize if this is not the correct way to submit this kind of requests, but I couldn’t find any other. You can contact me at my email maplesim@gmail.com

I am sorry for the delay in my response. Your website and program have been discussed with our legal and development teams. In order to continue discussion with you concerning these topics we would like to ask you to remove any links and advertisements from your website that violate the Nexon Terms of Use. These include any gold farming or hack related content. If this would cause financial issues for your website please feel free to use Sleepywood.net as an example of replacement advertisements to consider. Once this is done please let us know and we will be happy to talk with you further to discuss your continued involvement with Mapelstory and the Maplestory community. Thank you for your cooperation and we look forward to your response.

This is a response to the ticket 00272490 which was closed before I could reply.

Hello, sorry for the delay. Well, I have tried all what I can do to avoid the display of such advertisements. Those are Google ads and sometimes it gets a bit tricky to block them.

It was not clearly stated in your previous answer the concerns about my program. Before jumping into conclusions, let me tell you some aspects about it:

It is made in Adobe Flash and it’s intended to be used in the web. There was also a downloadable version that could be used on the desktop (also made in Flash), but I have ceased the development of that particular version since it gets in conflict with your “do not distribute” rule in the ToS of MapleStory. All what its left in the downloads section of my site are links to mirror sites that host the old versions of my program.

It does not interact with MapleStory or its communication protocols. What I do is extract the images from the game and re-pack them in such a way that my users can’t directly use. I know that this one gets in conflict with the “reverse engineer, decompile or disassemble” and “upload, redistribute” rules of the ToS, this is the reason of my letter. Since my original idea was web usage, I needed to use the individual images and not the whole MapleStory wz packages where the images are. You should know that I have never posted in my site any of the tools that I use for extraction, neither the procedures I do to extract the images.

It uses images from different MapleStory clients. The current supported clients are from Japan, China, Global, SEA, Taiwan, Thailand, Europe and Korea.

It is widely popular. I am going to be honest here, I never expected such a huge popularity of the program. There were already online character simulators of the game before I made this. The key factor that made it so popular was the ability to animate the avatar, and the vast collection of items it had, just like the game itself. It is the prefered tool in creating animated videos of MapleStory in YouTube and fan-made stories (or comics) of MapleStory. I have heard a lot of stories about people who started using my program, and then jumped right into the game because they liked so much how the avatars looked.

That’s all about it. I am eager to know you decision about my program.

Best regards,
Ion

Greetings,

Unfortunately, it is a bit unclear as to what specifically you are asking for.

Please provide a detailed explanation of what you are hoping to get from us. Are you looking for a partnership? For permission to use the intellectual property? Or just asking if your program is legal and ok to develop?

We are going to keep this ticket open, and you can reply to these questions by adding a comment to this ticket.

Thank you, and please have a good day.

ALERT: January OdinMS Update!

Posted by Savage On February - 2 - 2010

On January 25th the OdinMS creators made the first update in almost a year on their website. Read it below.

Update (01/25/10): After a period of silence something is happening again. We received a bill of indictment from the public prosecutor. Therein we are accused of having illegally copied, distributed or broadcasted a work without the agreement of the holder of rights. The contained report of the facts of the case is in our opinion quite dubious to say the least.
A Korean attestor is named to have prepared an incriminating expertise for which he seemingly was granted access to all of our confiscated data.
Our lawyers will now again request access to the records so we can review the actual evidence (including the expertise of the Korean guy) and decide if we want to name any other attestors or request hearing of evidences.
The lawsuit takes place at the juvenile court (since one of us is still younger than 21) of the Amtsgericht Neunkirchen which is the lowest level court possible in Germany.
(Please note: Contrary to all rumors this marks the beginning of the first lawsuit against us. Everything that happened before was just part of preliminary proceedings. There has been no kind of judgment so far.)

Who are you rooting for in the OdinMS vs. Nexon lawsuit?

Happy New Year From Savage and Staff!

Posted by Savage On January - 4 - 2010

Happy New Year everyone! I hope you all had a totally awesome holiday. Too bad we’re stuck in school again :( !It’s a new year, and more importantly a new decade! 2010 is sure to be a great year and I would like to thank everyone has been with us since 2007 when we were just a bunch of kids writing about a video game. We really appreciate your support over the years and hope to continue to supply you with a reliable source for MapleStory news for as long as MapleStory remains online.

The past month has been a slow one and I would like to apologize to our readers for that. There hasn’t been a steady flow of news and updates on the site. We have all been busy with our own lives. I’ve been working vigorously with my band (which is my true passion) and most of our staff has been busy with school. Not to mention there really hasn’t been anything going on that you couldn’t just visit the official MapleStory website to find out.

This past summer the private server situation reached a climax. As Nexon was able to gain control of the private server situation there was a drastic drop in news and frankly interest in them. Private servers have been a popular reading topic amongst maplers throughout 2009 but now they seem irrelevant. Of course private servers will always remain a sensitive and important topic, but any recent stories we could have published would only be satisfying private server owners who get a kick out of seeing a front page story about the closing of their server. Not only are these articles boring and often provoke “who cares” attitudes they also lead to dozens of inappropriate spam comments that would normally get you banned from a forum. Therefore, in 2010 we will be limiting the amount of private server closure posts and commenting will be disabled. Although we appreciate everyone’s interest in commenting on our website and sharing their thoughts with others, inappropriate comments ruin the viewing experience for others. This does not mean we will not be posting articles about private servers, it just means that we intend to make your reading experience at maple-news.com more enjoyable and safer overall.

We look forward to making some changes to the site and releasing our news and music radio station in partnership with VuWave. If you are interested in becoming a news anchor and/or DJ send an e-mail to apply@maple-news.com inquiring about the position.

Once again thanks to everyone for your support. We never expected so many people would visit our website every day and read our news. We love you guys and hope you had a great holiday!

-Savage

DestinyMS Fights to Stay Afloat

Posted by Savage On November - 5 - 2009

It looks like MapleStory’s most infamous private server to date won’t be around much longer. On November 3rd the administrator of DestinyMS and RPM, Shadow, made the announcement that they have been unable to pay their bills for the past few months. Shadow also confessed that they owe €1,500 euros which is roughly $2,230 for our American readers.

Due to unable to pay for our bills for the past few months, or barely.
We already had a problem earlier with out domains, what, luckely, got settled before any damage ocures.

As of now, our DMS server has lost its connection untill further notice, we had about 1000-1500 euro standing open on bills, where we paid about 350 euro from yesterday.
I’m letting them charge 500euro from my bank account, after this is done, hopefully we will get our service back.

How long this will last, is unknown, might be a day, or 3-5 days. Maybe even till the end of the month.

As i’ve got more bills to pay, and i rather wouldnt give up that 500euro just yet (as i really need the money), but as i have no other choice…. i will have to, otherwise it will be byebye DMS, and i dont want that to happen.

Anyways, everyone’s updated. Enjoy the downtime.

Do not complain unless you donate(d). Thanks.

Regards,

DMS Administration.

Shadow has stated he will be paying €500 in an attempt to put the server online, but as one onlooker commented, “Flushing their money down the toilet is a better investment!” it doesn’t look like it will do them any good.

Help us out by donating and earn cool features!
