Yesterday a Scanian Game Master revealed his login information via the game announcement ticker at the top of the screen.

Moments later, it seemed his account had been hacked.

During our 2x EXP weekend event, a MapleStory GM named “RavenSCA” made a critical error while drafting an in-game announcement. The GM in question accidentally posted his account information while using a text shortcut program meant to issue commands within MapleStory. This was a serious breach of protocol, and the GM will be disciplined. In addition, we’re investigating the actions of a player who abused this error, which is a serious breach of our Terms of Use.

We hope this information can shed some light for our players. Due to the sensitive nature of the problem, we will have no more information to provide on this topic, and we ask players to please avoid discussing the matter on our forums.

Nexon, are you ready?

Due to the recent reports about GMS (MapleStory Global), using a new set of codes to launch the game via their website. Nexon might not have noticed… we use Window computers to play MapleStory, not Macs (Apple Computers)!

What do I mean?

Hypothetically speaking, launching Maplestory using a website launcher is like managing your banking/SSN (Social Security Number) without thinking about spy-ware entering your computer, and stealing your data.

Playing MapleStory on the official website is a BIG risk. Nexon really has to step up their protection. The new Hackshield program currently in use wouldn’t do squat to protect us from website-based attacks especially account fraud and keyloggers. Keyloggers are extremely deadly. They can see what you type on your computer and where you go.

Spyware is also a concern. There are tons of websites out there pretending to be official MapleStory websites offering to give you free NX for your account information. In early 2008 there were at least 100,000 accounts hacked due to their owners entering their information on a fake official site. (According to the Maplestory Website Notice in Early 2008)

Nexon and everyone else in the MapleStory community should STOP and think about how this change can affect the safety of accounts. Security must be improved if the web client is to be a success. Just be careful and mindful of URL’s and links and you should be fine. Make sure that when you log in to the MapleStory homepage to launch MapleStory you aren’t on maplestory.nexonn.net.

It was recently announced that Nexon America will release a web client for the MapleGlobal game version. This change will not affect game play whatsoever but according to Nexon, will make things easier. See the official announcement below.

Dear Maplers,

MapleStory will soon be moving to a new method for starting the game client. Rather than launching the game from your desktop, the game will be launched directly from the official MapleStory website. Once the game is patched, the icon on your desktop will now direct you to the official MapleStory website. At the website, simply log in with your Nexon ID, click on the large “Start Game” button and the game will launch. It’s that easy!

Q: What does start MapleStory from the website mean?

Q: Why are you switching to launching MapleStory from the website?

A: Moving to launching from the website allows us to do several things for our players:

-        It allows your game and web experience to be combined into a single log in. You will now be logged in to all of Nexon’s websites whenever you use Start MapleStory from Website. This should make it easier for players to find game information, get technical support and switch between games.

-       It helps us to better communicate with our players. By placing messages of importance on the website (in-game events, maintenance notices, technical issues, update notifications and the like), we can be sure of reaching you as you log in to the game.

-       The website is already available when exiting the game. This ensures that any emergency message affecting gameplay will be visible.

-       It allows us to display Web-only and community event notifications that help us enhance your MapleStory experience.

Q: Will this affect the game or how I play the game?

A: No. The only thing that is changing is how you start the game. This does not change the game or gameplay in any way.

Nexon’s latest attempt to earn a quick buck from your piggy bank is this holiday season’s “White Winter Sale.” Hoping you’ll ask jolly old Saint Nick for a Nexon Game card to cash in on all the discounts in equips, pets, gachapon tickets, marriages, etc. Nexon America has succeeded once again in convincing thousands of 10 year olds to go beg their parents and Santa Claus for $25.00 and boy is it working.

Only a few weeks after the Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales Nexon is at it again. It’s no coincidence that Nexon released the Aran class and a new server right around Christmas time. Only a few weeks earlier players purchased tons of hot items on sale (when the cash shop wasn’t glitched) and now there’s another sale? Hundreds of forumers on Sleepywood.net weren’t slow to criticize Nexon’s “eerie precision” in planning events.

So far, Nexon’s sale has been highly effective. Almost every item has been sold out (usually within minutes). Today in only 30 minutes in the Galicia server every pet package was sold out. The question becomes, “Is it worth it?” Some deals are too good to be true and are usually snatched up by lurkers in the cash shop and other times only 10 quantities are sold. Since you don’t purchase individual items when you buy NX cash you’re basically throwing caution to the wind. Elemintz of Scania purchased a $25 Nexon Pre-paid card in hopes of getting a pet only to have his hopes shot down. “I went out and bought an NX card hoping to get some sweet items on sale. When I logged on to buy a pet today, they were all sold out! I was like OMGWTFBBQ!”

With only a few days left in the sale we can only guess if people will actually be able to purchase the items they want at great prices or if they just wasted their money.

Aran – New Class

Aran, the Hero Revived. During the age when the Black Mage ruled Maple World, five heroes protected its citizens from his villainy. They fought the Black Mage with their unique powers, but it was impossible to protect the world and the people. Rather than see their people get hurt, the heroes sent them away to the safety of Victoria Island. Then, they began their final battle with the Mage.

 

When the dust finally cleared, the heroes had disappeared, leading everyone to believe they had died. Now, centuries after…

 

…Aran rises again!

Aran, one of the five heroes who fought the Black Mage, is a fearless Pole arm master.

After being cursed by the Black Mage and spending centuries in a frozen state, Aran woke up one day as an average man—no powers and no memory of his past. But waiting for Aran was a little girl named Lilin. As the last faithful believer of the prophecy—the revival of the heroes—her clan had received long ago, Lilin’s life purpose is to help Aran retrieve his past and prevent the impending reawakening of the Black Mage. With Lilin’s help, Aran slowly begins to regain his old self.

 

 

New Tutorial for Explorers

New and experienced players alike will find something to like in the new and improved Explorer tutorial. First, there’s an option for experienced players to just skip the tutorial section and jump straight to Lith Harbor. For new players the entire area has been tightened up. The instructional illustrations and animation are clearer and easier to understand to get into the MapleStory adventure as quickly as possible!

 

Mushroom Castle

Characters between levels 30 and 38 are getting a whole new call to adventure. It seems that the dastardly King Pepe has taken over the Mushroom Castle and is forcing the mushroom princess to marry his son, a penguin who… well, let’s just say the lights are on but nobody’s home. If you’re between level 30 and 38, make your way from Henesys through the “Empty House” map to get to Mushroom Forest Field. Once you’re there, talk to the exiled citizens of Mushroom castle, storm the walls, battle bosses, save a Princess and return an empire to its rightful Mushking!

 

Water of Life – Redesigned Functionality

Aran’s revival has triggered a revival of another kind –- your pet! Revive your loyal companion with a few clicks. Simply purchase the new Water of Life and poof — your pet is back in action. Save your questing for the new “Aran” and holiday content!

Vega’s Spell

Vega’s Spell (10%) will increase a 10% scroll’s success rate to 30% for only 3,000NX! Vega’s Spell (60%) will increase a 60% scroll’s success rate to 90% for only 4,000NX! Vega’s Spell won’t work on every scroll, so be sure to check the list to make sure your scroll is eligible!

 

 

New World – Galicia

It’s a new world for a new year! The year 2010 is almost here and what better way to celebrate than by starting with a clean slate in a brave new world?

 

So we’re calling all settlers willing to venture into new land — welcome to Galicia, MapleStory’s 11^th new world!

 

To help you settle in, all residents of Galicia will enjoy double experience from 12/10 to 1/11.

 

There’s also a Galicia-only quest that awaits you! Upon arrival at Lith Harbor, speak with Teo to get started. You can earn 100,000 mesos for completing “Teo’s Nostalgic Reminiscing I,” available for level 10 to 29 or 200,000 mesos for completing “Teo’s Nostalgic Reminiscing II” for level 30 and up!

 

In other good news, the opening of Galicia means that Demethos and Yellonde have moved on from being the “new” worlds. That means that these worlds are now opened up to the Maple Trading System (MTS) and eligible for character transfers!

Receive Lilin’s Ring when your aran levels up to 30, 50, and 70 between 12/10/2009 and 6/16/2010. Be sure to talk to the Maple Administrator after reaching level 20! The rings can be shared with all characters on the same account by placing them in storage.

 

-Wedding Present

From 12/10/09 – 1/19/10 if your aran character weds another aran, you will receive a pet Penguin, Snowman, or Crystal Rudolph as your wedding present!

 

-Everyday Event

Make sure to talk to NPC Cassandra everyday from 12/10/09 – 1/19/09 and stay logged in for one hour. After the hour, answer some quiz questions and win an Aran Paper Box. Open it and receive some really cool items!

Bug Fixes!

The issue causing avatars to show incorrectly in rankings and player statues for reaching level 200 has been fixed.

NLC PQ bug that caused the skill reactor to not work has been fixed.

Permanent pets have been added to the multi-pet effect.

Permanent pet owners can now get the Wonderful Pet Owner medal.

Permanent Pets now have sound effects.

 

 

What amazed me was that it said “Lillin’s Ring. Lv 30, 50, AND 70. That means 3 times the ring. Too good to be true? Of course! They’ll probably be nerfed.

Another thing which was amazing is that we get Mushroom Castle before MapleSEA did. Too bad it’s for lower levels. At least it’s another training map which won’t be ksede by higher lvs. ^_^

It seems to be confirmed that the new major class in MapleStory, Aran, is coming to MapleGlobal on December 9th, 2009. This has not been confirmed by Nexon America or the MapleStory administrators but the general consensus in the community is that December 9th is the big day. However, my personal opinion is that Aran will be released no earlier than December 14th. Why? The Aran events end on December 14th. It wouldn’t make sense to release a class while events preluding the class were still in progress.

The Aran is an ice-based polearm class that, like the Cygnus Knights, has awoken to defeat the Black Mage. I could go into further details, but it would be easier if you just referred to our breaking story on the Aran class made in June.

The upcoming MapleGlobal version 0.79 patch is going to unleash some pretty heavy updates. Some of which include permanent pets (for a limited time of course) and new 1st Job quests that make leveling for newbies even easier.

MapleStory will be going through a scheduled game update on Wednesday, November 11th, 2009.

This update involves all game servers, and will last for approximately 5 and 1/2 hours.

          If you stop snooping around, I will get you tickets to the big game.  
   I have my eye on you.

My fellow coworkers are buzzing with excitement.  I think something major is coming to MapleStory soon, so I’ve been sneaking around disguised as a paper clip collecting as much intel for you as I can.  I was able to get my hands on some scuttlebutt, yet the details are hazy… maybe you can help me make sense of what I’ve found so far?

With my paper clip disguise on, I carefully slinked over to the development department.  The first piece of evidence I found was a top-secret document marked “J.A.” sitting on a developer’s desk.  J.A.?  Hmmm…  “Jelly Abdomen?”  No.  “Jeopardy Answers?”  Possible, but unlikely.  “Job Advancement!”  That makes sense!  Job advancement is one of MapleStory’s coolest features.  If dev has figured out a way to make it even better, I can’t wait to see what it is!

The next pieces of evidence I uncovered were a leash, a chew toy, and a collar in the break room.  At first, I thought our office intern had gotten loose again.  But then I noticed that the word “permanent” was inscribed on the collar, which left me even more confused.  No one is weird enough to name their pet “Permanent,” even in our office.  Then it hit me: this must be a part of whatever it is development is so pumped about… but I don’t understand what it all means.  Help me!

On my way back to the GM Headquarters, I crept by a conference room where there was a whiteboard with some words frantically scribbled on it.  The handwriting was awful, but I think it said “Wolf in sheep’s clothing party!!!”  Whoever wrote it was very excited, which made me very excited.  But what could it mean?  Was it some weird office party coming up?  We’ve had weirder, so that could be it.  It might be some kind of new gameplay feature or event, but I can’t be sure.  I’m perplexed.  What do you think it means?

In any case, my curiosity was running wild!  I saw the dev team gathering for a meeting.  Since nobody ever suspects the paper clip, I was able to get close enough to hear a few words.  I couldn’t make them out very well, but somebody said “points.”  New kinds of points?  New ways to earn points?  What is it?  “Dusty artifact,” the same voice said.  Okay, now I’m totally confused.  I inched closer to hear more clearly, but no luck.  The last thing I could make out was “-ologist.”  Biologist?  Entomologist?  Apologist?  What does it all mean?  I need answers!

My quest to discover what was coming to MapleStory was presenting me with more questions than answers.  Discouraged, I trudged back to the GM Headquarters and flopped down at my ultra-cool Superdesk 5000.  I was almost ready to give up and make myself feel better by treating myself to some new Gachapon when I spotted an envelope lying on my keyboard.  Could this be the answer I was looking for?  I ripped it open and read the letter inside.

Who is “Anonymous”?  I don’t know anyone with that name.  Are they friend or foe?  Wait… “tickets”…  “game” … this must be another clue!  What in MapleStory has tickets?  How can it get even better?  Do you have any idea?  Because I sure don’t!

I can’t figure it all out, but I know I’m getting closer.  This much is clear: whatever is coming soon is going to be at least ten kinds of awesome.  I’ll keep snooping around for more clues.  This time, I think I’ll disguise myself as a ceiling tile and see what the design team is doing.  As soon as I have more intel, I’ll report back to you.  Until then, happy Mapling!
