Ridiculous Roll Back in MapleGlobal Causes Many Users to Quit

Hundreds of thousands of dedicated players to the MapleGlobal MapleStory version run by NEXON America in Los Angeles, California were disappointed last night when they heard the Dual Blade release was postponed a week. But, no one could expect what would happen this afternoon once the near 24-hour maintenance yielded.

ROLL BACK

Not your typical rollback usually a few minutes or a few hours but almost a week. Players (many of which who are staff members who play the game) lost their characters, their levels, their money, NX items, guilds, buddies, etc. KobeKun, a fellow writer worked hard on a level 30+ character the past few days while helping the new Maple-News guild, Repulse, in Scania. So, what happened? His character no longer exists (along with the money, items, and NX he used on it in the past few days). Savage’s character in Scania received a zakum helmet for his character and now no longer has it (after doing a zakum run which takes a lot of time and effort). Our whole guild was completely decimated after spending time and NX advertising and building friendships with people. Now they’re all gone and we have no idea how to get them back.

We understand how dire the situation was (potentially destroying the economy permanently) but the question any logical player has to ask is, “How did this happen in the first place?” What about all the hacking prevent shields (HackShield, firewalls, etc.) and server protection. These hackers were sending packets to the server and exploiting holes in the server. Although hackers were the ones who caused this whole ordeal, it was Nexon’s lack of security and haste to stop them before it got out of hand (they announced they knew about the hack a day after maplers on forums and other fan sites knew). Instead, almost every mapler has been rolled back in one way or another and many have lost items that can’t just be re-purchased and levels that took time they may not have now. Worst of all, none of this was hinted at or revealed at all by Nexon (clearly knowing it would cause an insane uproar) and a compensation they offered this:

Dear Maplers,

As you may be aware, an exploitable bug in MapleStory resulted in fake mesos being generated by malicious users. Once we identified this problem, we made the difficult decision to bring down the MapleStory servers to prevent further harm from being caused. Fake mesos increases the prices of Maple items for everyone, and this is an unacceptable activity which harms the game experience for all our players. While the servers are offline, we plan to fix the bug, remove all mesos that were falsely generated, and potentially take action against any exploiters who used this bug. Due to the severity of this issue, many accounts may be restored to a prior state. Any NX spent after the restore point will be refunded to impacted players.

Extended Maintenance
We anticipate servers will remain offline for tonight as we enter our regularly scheduled weekly maintenance period. Servers will be brought back online tomorrow morning at 6 am Pacific (9 am Eastern).

New Dual Blade Launch Date
Unfortunately, addressing this issue impacts our game development schedule, and so we’ll be pushing the Dual Blade launch date to Wednesday, July 21st. The additional time ensures that we are able to fix the current issue, and fully prepare for the Dual Blade update. We know how much our players have been looking forward to the launch of Dual Blade. We’ve had a lot of fun working on the update events, the Q&A and other activities, and we’ll continue to work to ensure a smooth release next week.

Compensation
We know that the downtime, the update delay and the bug itself is bad for our players, and so we’ll be offering a mix of compensation and events that all players can participate in.

– Cash item extension
– 5,000 Maple Points for users that logged in between 7/11/2010 and 7/13/2010.
– The Golden Temple will be available for one extra week. Golden Temple ticket items will also be available with the Golden Temple Invitation on sale and all the Golden Temple packages offering double the number of invites than before.
Vega’s Spell will remain on sale for one extra week.
One A Day Sale will also be extended for a week. Make sure to check out the daily item!
– 2x EXP and Drop events on the following dates:

a. Wednesday, July 14th  12 PM – 6PM Pacific Time (3 PM – 9 PM Eastern)
b. Thursday, July 15th  12 PM – 6PM Pacific Time (3 PM – 9 PM Eastern)
c. Friday, July 16th  12 PM – 6 PM Pacific Time (3 PM – 9 PM Eastern)
d. Saturday, July 17th  10 AM – 10 PM Pacific Time (1 PM – 1 AM Eastern)
e. Sunday, July 18th  10 AM – 10 PM Pacific Time (1 PM – 1 AM Eastern)

Downtime, downtime, downtime. Okay, so what about the roll backs? What about the levels? 5,000 maple points and a couple 2x EXP events and you expect us to forgive you? If you log on any world you’ll see super megaphones by users plainly saying, “Fuck you Nexon, I quit.” This is a pathetic compensation and depending on your situation it may be a good idea to quit. Clearly Nexon America does not understand the magnitude of what they’ve done and offering a 6 hour 2x EXP event every day until July 18th is not going to fix the problem. At the very least, 24 hour 2x is in order for the next week as well as a larger NX compensation and a customer service workforce dedicated to helping people who lost their items. Golden Temple tickets on sale? They should be FREE! All the events should be extended (Return of the Explorers, for example, for those who’s characters were rolled back) This is a slap in the face for a lot of maplers.

Although many of you may consider this post a rant (which it kind of is, I’ll admit it) I think everyone is a bit pissed off right now, to say the least. Post your experience with the roll back below and how you were affected.

Well I don’t see why everyone should complain about this rollback. Nexon have no chance in the world to prevent such things from happening so just think over it, would you rather live with a rotten economy for the next 2 years or lose a little bit of your playing time to see everything be back to normal a few weeks later rather than having a fucked up high priced economy that will surely NOT go away for another couple years.

So please, think over it for a minute.

Also the compenation aint bad, I actually find it to be quite nice, Nexon also couldn’t have give you anything, so please be happy that you atleast got SOMETHING as a compensation for the rollback.

Quite messy post of mine, just live with it D:

It’s simple, Nexon screwed us over. End of story.

They rolled back ome players who did nothing but work hard and train and didnt roll back others who exploited and such. A few hours is fin. 6 days is too much. I lost 25 levels and got kicked back to level 0. Nexon thinks that 2x exp for a week (which ill be on vacation during anyway) and 5k maple points is compensation?!

On behalf of all the maplers who were screwed over, may I say that we want more compensation.

Kobe, Nexon had no choice. It was this or death. If anybody quits, they’re idiots. You’re right, players who exploited the ban weren’t rolled back. Why weren’t the rolled back? Because they were banned. Do you have any idea how quickly those illegal mesos can spread? Picked up a random 10 mesos off the ground recently? It’s possible that you’ve just picked up illegal mesos.

MapleStory is a free game which means that hackers and glitchers can easily jump on and do what they want and then just create a new account. I think Nexon has done a good job supporting MapleStory for 5 years and know that MapleStory will continue to be one of America’s most popular game in the years to come. What those people are quitting need to do is stop and think that it was either their accounts are rolled back to July 11 or the Maple economy be destroyed for several months, if not years.

I can kind of understand how the security flaws in the game (which are clearly apparent as the glitch apparently was not completely fixed) is definitely Nexon’s bad. Many argue that they could have isolated the exploited mesos but I’m sure they were considering time. Although I can definitely understand why people are upset, I guess there was no other way.

Apparently Galicia hackers exploited it for a third time today hence the emergency maintenance. If anything we should blame the selfish hackers who are abusing a video game and ruining it for other people. They’re the ones who don’t have anything better to do and don’t care about anyone but themselves. I’d assume legal action will be taken to the sites guilty of spreading this thing.

    @KobeKun
Impossible. Tickets filed in the “Feedback” category and automatically closed because they are feedback and require no response direct from the Nexon team. They probably won’t see for another few days or weeks. Also, if you want a response, sending feedback to Nexon is surely not the way to go.

Wow………..a 1 week roll back? This sort of reminds me of the rollbacks in private servers…Funny, this just had to happen right when i sold some of my VALUABLE goods……On one hand, i kept my chairs, zhelm, and 10+ att wgs that i sold. on the down side, i got a total net loss of like what, 200~250mil? Perfect….Maybe thats not that much these days, but I AM A PHILANTHROPIST. In other words, i aint happy. Serously.

~Moving on to answering few comments~

1: Icy, Nexon actually did comment that there was a rollback, albeit in a rather “sly” and technical way. This is a quote from Nexon:
“Due to the severity of this issue, many accounts may be restored to a prior state.”

By “prior state”, Nexon just meant that they KNOW you got rollbacked, but they sugarcoated their words to per say, prevent consumer spam. Simply put, they dont want u to know that THEY know you got rollbacked (lol)

2: Maybe im being paranoid, but consider this: Soon after the hyperinflation of fake mesos, there WAS A ROLLBACK UNPRSCENTED IN MAPLE HISTORY. Seems…..i dunno, strange?

Nexon’s comments made it seem like the rollback was maybe intentional. At any rate, don’t expect Nexon to actually read your customer feedback and etc.

In fact, if you complain on Maplestory via smega, you might be banned. If you complain by using feedback and customer complaints, chances are it’ll end up in a compartment titled “In-Game Issues” or something like that.

Odds are, Nexon wont read your complaints. They’ll put it in a category for complaints, and the only way for them to notice things is if the category has ALOT of messages.
