Nexon’s New Threat…The Net

Posted by kotopros On February - 6 - 2010

Nexon's Eye Nexon, are you ready?

Due to the recent reports about GMS (MapleStory Global), using a new set of codes to launch the game via their website. Nexon might not have noticed… we use Window computers to play MapleStory, not Macs (Apple Computers)!

What do I mean?

Hypothetically speaking, launching Maplestory using a website launcher is like managing your banking/SSN (Social Security Number) without thinking about spy-ware entering your computer, and stealing your data.

Playing MapleStory on the official website is a BIG risk. Nexon really has to step up their protection. The new Hackshield program currently in use wouldn’t do squat to protect us from website-based attacks especially account fraud and keyloggers. Keyloggers are extremely deadly. They can see what you type on your computer and where you go.

Spyware is also a concern. There are tons of websites out there pretending to be official MapleStory websites offering to give you free NX for your account information. In early 2008 there were at least 100,000 accounts hacked due to their owners entering their information on a fake official site. (According to the Maplestory Website Notice in Early 2008)

Nexon and everyone else in the MapleStory community should STOP and think about how this change can affect the safety of accounts. Security must be improved if the web client is to be a success. Just be careful and mindful of URL’s and links and you should be fine. Make sure that when you log in to the MapleStory homepage to launch MapleStory you aren’t on maplestory.nexonn.net.

Is Nexon ready for this big leap? OR am I just insane to bring this up…I don’t know…but tell us what you think.

  1. Savage Said,

Nice job on this article, Koto.

This is a major concern. It’s much easier to hack into the website than into the game itself. Now DDoS attacks that normally may just affect the game website can also affect the game itself. Nexon may have to shell out more money to protect the game and increase security features.

In my opinion, this is just a way to stop private servers. By placing the game on the website, people will no longer have access to the .wz files and thus private servers won’t be able to patch as easily. This is just an honest assumption…I really don’t know much about the technical side of private servers but this seems to make some sense.

    Thanks Savage,

GMS is also following Korea Nexon’s footstep’s. KMS had also create a “Game Start” maplestory launcher. DDoS attack on Nexon is like a 99% someone would do it. Let alone private servers. If you are right with stopping private servers, then looks like we have some more things that are going to be added to GMS, (Finally)?

  3. Impulse Said,

I do not think that this will actually stop private servers, because the developers that are in the MapleStory Private Server Community will keep finding different ways to make a private server. There are many ways to get onto a private server, and Private Servers are right there with GMS, they are already starting develop v80, and they can have almost all of the party quests, shops, maps, etc working just like GMS does, but this may or may not stop private server. I highly doubt it.

  4. Wind Said,

    @Kotopros

VERY nice article. Finally someone mentions these things. MMORPGS are a HAVEN for hacking. Any one of these masssive/big RPGs with 10million players+ have hackers. Runescape, WoW, Maplestory, and Ragnarok to name a few are a haven for hackers.

In fact, recently, I’ve been getting fake antivirus pop-ups are REALLY famous Maplestory sites like basilmarket (not kidding its happend 4x already) Maybe I’m being a paranoid squrriel addicted freak (stares at savage) but Maplestory sites seem to have more viruses/trojans/worms. (except for the official site)

If you get a virus/worm/trojan/hacked, please note:

-fake antivirus sites are just an annoyance; they’re easy to spot and EASY to fix (just remove the infected stuff/ virus folder while you’re running msconfig)

-REAL viruses tend to try be more stealthy. A golden rule of ANY espionage is to STEAL INFORMATION WITHOUT OTHERS KNOWING IT!!!! Out of all the viruses I had, 70% of them were advertising viruses, which are VERY noticeable.

-If you get hacked in Maplestory, people either dc hacked you, you went to an illegal site *cough* *cough*, revealed your personal info TO ANYONE (yes, even friends),
have an infected computer, or you pissed off a professional hacker. For the last choice, that’s not a joke-any proffessional hacker can kill your virtual world.

-DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE HACKERS. You think “oh, i have no virus and I don’t go to porno sites so I’m safe~~”, but you’re not-period. Hackers in Maple Sea dc hacked hundreds it not thousands of accounts ( they even announced on a smega that they were going to hack accounts).

Chinese hackers have also hacked google, adobe flashplayer, and Maplestory. Read that about the Chinese gov. hacking google and adobe flashplayer before you say that your computer is safe.

*This is an example of a PROFFESIONAL hacker. In the late mid 20th century, a 17 year old was hired by U.S.S.R. to hack the files of the CIA. He successfully hacked CIA, but was arrested soon after and finally joined the CIA (either that or you become incarcerated in a jail). Currently he is most likely under the FBI relocation act.

Generally the hackers you see in Maplestory doing stuff like fly hacks are generally wanna-be hackers that downloads hacks. Just be nice to people; mess with the wrong sort and you can kiss your damn virtual world goodbye.

  5. Wind Said,

For all of you who think you’re all oh~~ so~~~~ safe~~. Here’s a groundbreaker for you.

-The chinese government hacked google, adobe, etc. (if u check news on yahoo, npr, google, etc, you’ll find it)

-Chinese and Eastern countries are hacking EVERYONE (you probably know that already)

They already hacked into government agencies,e-mail accounts of several US soldiers, and basically nations including US, Turkey, most of Europe, etc.

Let’s all think logically nao =3

A government agency’s site is divided into many compartments. You must sign in your ID on the site and you GET ACCESS EQUIVALENT TO YOUR RANK. (so if you’re a sergeant, you get more access than a corporal. simple, right?)

Adding to that I really think that the government intelligence services have better protection against viruses than a normal person’s (not saying people can’t hack governments; im just saying it’s harder to do so than hack a regular person’s computer)

    Heres the source
    http://tech.yahoo.com/blogs/null/160657

ZeuS, zlob trojan, conficker worm, antivirus 2008~12, antivirus shield, Avundo, trojan.pdf, etc. etc.

  6. Lawls Said,

    It’s not Window, it’s Windows.

The game isn’t actually hosted on the website. It most likely launches a file on your hard drive with specific arguments (That’s why you have to install the game first). Hackshield isn’t meant to protect you really, it’s more aimed at stopping hacks/cheats.

Besides, it’s your fault for not having a decent anti virus solution.

  7. Surface Said,

    But here’s the thing.
Keyloggers can be used for variety of things.

It doesn’t matter if the game is launched via website or by your desktop.
    There is no real difference.

I can imagine there launching the game via website for extra revenue (Google Adsense, and traffic).

    However Keyloggers are stealthy.

  8. Lawls Said,

Yes.. which is why we install Anti Viruses/Anti Malware or avoid questionable sites such as this lol.

Btw, keyloggers still can’t capture your Maplestory PIN.

I recommend Kaspersky Internet Security, however no solution is 100% effective, which is why we practice safe internet habits.
