WonderKing

At first glance it looks like a MapleStory clone and in honesty, that was the very first thing I felt when I started the game. Once you get started your are greeted with three character slots, because this game is still in beta your options are very limited at the time as far as color of eyes, hair, and clothes. The hair and eyes are actually based on the characters class, which you choose at the start and even the stats are randomly distributed to fit your class. (Please do not ask about stat builds because even I am not sure and going on a MapleStory build for warrior, 2dex 3str)
Classes are the same for MapleStory with the exception of Pirate of the newly to be added Cygnus Knights. That being Mage, Swordsman, Scout (Known as Bowman to us), and Thief. However there are two paths each class can take which would be best explained or shown by you guys visiting this link.
Characters
Stepping Inside
Once inside you are greeted with the tutorial for the game, which is pretty straight forward. Just to include though here is a run of the current buttons at start.
Ctrl – Attack
Alt – Jump (Press alt again to double jump)
Arrows to move
Down Arrow and Alt – Jump down
Down Arrow – Pick up items

To my surprise, you will actually be greeted by the NPCs with a small voice clip, which may or may not be a good thing as some of the voice acting for the NPCs are kind of annoying.

As part of the tutorial you will learn how to shop which is yet another easy thing to learn. The shop will display the items for sale, the basket is current items selected to purchase or sell and the very bottom will show your ending total once you hit trade.

Then comes to the shops for armor and weapons. You can browse through all the gear or choose which set of gear you would like to look at so it only shows your class.
Fighting and leveling up will be what all other MMORPGs are known for, kill monsters and complete quests in order to advance to higher levels. Of course you will have your skills and party members (if you choose to party) to help aid this normal routine. If you are injured you will blink and be invincible for a few short moments. As far as enemies being re-spawned you will see an enemy start to blink showing the enemy is about to spawn, nice little warning to move the monsters your currently fighting to another area of the ledge or map.

Stats and Skills
As can be expected, once you level up you will be awarded 5 stat points and a few skill points (I dont know if they increase as you level) The stats are the normal Str, Dex, Int, Luck, as for Vit and Wis, this is to manually add more health or magic to your character.

As for skills you will be given points when you level which can be used within your Basic skills or your class skills. Basic skills have to do with increasing your HP/MP gain while resting as well as your MaxHP/MaxMP gain per level. The skills are built, the best way I can explain it, like World of Warcraft, in which its a skill tree which means if you see an arrow from a skill to another one, you will need the minimum of skill points in the first one in order to get the next.
An example is in the basic with HP up. You need rest to get the hp restore and you need 5hp restore AND be level 6 to start adding into MaxHP up.

Storage and Open Market
You will have a place to store your goods should you find gear for your class and be to low level for it or any other reason you have to use it and space can be increased, however the method to doing so im unsure of. By that I mean I dont know if you need to pay real cash to expand or if you can find the stuff to do so.
Open Market is pretty much a mix of the Free Market and MTS. A big open area for us to use to sell our goods as well as a Sales Agent to sell our goods for us. However at first glance, stuff looked a bit pricey to me, but being new there, thats to be expected im sure.

Unique Stuff (compared to Maplestory)
~There is a PvP system that I’m sure a lot of people will look forward to. Should you meet someone you would like to challenge, right click them and request a battle. When the request is accepted you both will be teleported to a special arena where the battle will be held. There are many more PvP features to be added however currently, I believe its only for honor of being the stronger one.
~There is also a mining system in which you will be digging up gems and minerals which I haven’t explored all that much.
~Monster Cards can be collected as you kill monsters and once you get 3 you can morph into the monster yourself. There are of course stronger morphs available to those who pay cash (as what I got from the loading page that was shown)
The game was alright, I cant say its better than MapleStory and I definitely cant say it is worse as its all about opinion. However looks are deceiving, when I looked at the YouTube videos of it, a part of me wanted to just say no to this game, but once I got inside and actually played it for a bit I changed my mind. It is still in beta and you will need a Beta Key, however just Google for one and you can find web sites giving away beta keys just for signing up for the site. If your interested in trying this game you can follow this link.

Not that I want this game to be a shut down or anything, but I will be genuinely shocked if NEXON doesn’t at least attempt to make some kind complaint about this game.

  2. UnknownFox Said,

I dont think Nexon can really complain because there are many games before Maplestory that could argue Nexon copied some of thier aspects, though that is just my idea.

WonderKing>MS. More skills, PvP, AH, Better Graphic, and more. Yea. This is some kind of clone of MS, but much better clone than other similiar game. They made a copy of good game, which is MS and add a lot of things that we, i think, wont see in MS.

And now we don’t have to spam one skill for 40 lvl ;]

  13. TehOther Said,

WonderKing has been out way longer than Maple story in other versions. Also, remember WK is just in closed beta, Maple just passed their 4th anniversary, and WonderKing already has many more things, some things that Maplers have wanted forever, so just think of what is coming in more patches for this game. It is going to get good =)

  14. mike Said,

Im in the closed beta. it is so much better than maple. although maple has improved a lot! wonderking i think is still a little better. and its not a clone! if you want to see a clone look up Windslayer.

Just want to point out that wonderking is definitly not better then maplestory in the graphics department. To me there graphics are really bad compared to maple. Maybe it’s just the limited features you get to choose from since its in beta, but the way that maple is made you can see a huge difference. I do think there are better things that WK has then maple does, but goes the same for maple. Both games have there pros and cons in it so you can’t say any of the games are better. Oh i also find WK a bit slower to play then maplestory.

  17. Zygon Said,

Here are a couple aspects about WonderKing.

    A) It’s a 2d side scroller. There is always going to be some similarities between all games with this platform.

    B) It’s much more loose of a MMO than MapleStory is. There’s more of a direct skill path for MS whereas WK allows you to be inventive with Skills. This also goes for AP, since you can make a Vit. (4 Vit, 1 Dex) Knight (Don’t try for any other since I haven’t tried yet) and trade off 100 extra damage at level 100 for 1k HP (which believe me it’s worth the investment, this also shoots down any need to have HP washing). I have a level 28 Swordsmen and he has about 1xxx HP and he still does expected damage.

    C) It’s much more of a level playing field since buying stuff from the Item Mall for WK won’t give you an advantage (like extra money or double exp).

    D) NDoors will treat WK better than Nexon treats MS. I’m sure by release it’ll have steady updates improving both game play and new content.

    E) In my opinion, the graphics are better in WK than they are in MS. Do you seriously believe MS had anything like this during their beta testing phase? You have to realize that GMS is v80 whereas WK is in OB and it can still compare even with 80 version updates under GMS’s belt.

Yes, there are emotes. They range from F6-F11/F7-F12 I believe.

WonderKing may be a “clone” in various aspects. To conclude “It’s a 2d side scroller done right”.

P.S. Don’t know if anyone cares or not, but I talked to a developer during CB and he said that WK uses 3 languages total for everything (F#, Java, C++).

  18. Seraph92 Said,

Ummmm btw this game was released in japan BEFORE maplestory even came out. So if anything Wizet (NOT Nexon) copied from this game. NEXON did not create Maplestory Wizet did, so NEXON has no right to bitch and complain.
