The Maple News Network was created in July of 2007 by Savage and friends. MNN is comprised of the main site, Maple-News.com, which is the first and only MapleStory news website. Maple-News Receives DMCA Notice From NEXON America
I checked my email today and found an email from NEXON America. This email was a DMCA notice (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) from NEXON America. I was shocked and disheartened to read this email. The email is from an official email address of NEXON America, it came from Lloyd Korn, who had previously sent a DMCA notice to SouthPerry.net. The email reads as followed:
To whom it may concern:
Nexon America Inc. (“Nexon”) is the owner of the Website, www.nexon.net (the “Website”) The website contains Nexon’s copyrighted material and the intellectual property in the Video Games on the Website, which include the game MapleStory (the “Game”), as well as the original images on the Website and embedded in the Game, and the object and source code for the site. In addition, Nexon is the owner in the trademarks NEXON and MapleStory, as well as hundreds of other trademarks used in association with the website.
You need to look no further than the homepage at www.maple-news.com (the “Rogue Website”) and to the forums at http://maple-news.com/forum/index.php to see Nexon copyrighted artwork and protected Trademarks all over the site which are used by the owner to promote his site, to show how to cheat and undermine the Game, slander the game and its developers, and to collect money from those who visit the site.
I hereby state that Nexon America Inc. is the owner of copyright in the images attached hereto and that to the best of my knowledge and belief, the infringing use was not authorized by it, its agents or the law. I further declare under penalty of perjury that this notice is accurate and that I am authorized to act as Nexon America Inc.’s agent in this matter. Pursuant to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, and your Terms of Service, Nexon America Inc. demands that you shut down the Rogue Website and remove the infringing material contained on said site. I request that you shut down the site immediately to prevent Nexon from suffering any more financial harm!

I have tried to call Mr. Korn today, but there was no answer. I assume they are closed today. I will contact Mr. Korn tomorrow to get to the bottom of this. Until then, I have removed most of the images relating to MapleStory from our website and forum. I disagree with much of what is stated, but I will speak with Mr. Korn before any drastic action regarding Maple-News is taken.

We receive no financial aid whatsoever. We do have google ads, but have never received a payment from them because we are no where near the $100 mark. I pay out of pocket, we do not accept any money from anyone else.
Whether or not it is a hoax, we will find out tomorrow.

Ok first off, this guy is such a hypocrite. He told Fiel that there is no problem with a maplestory fansite which is basically what this is. And I hope this guy will read this because I want him to know how big of a hypocrite he is. Hes saying they’re suffering financial harm yet, this website doesn’t accept money. The players here decided to quit maplestory and a lot of the MNN visitors still play GMS. They are thinking that if they close every maplestory site that we will all go back to their site. Well that’s just wrong. I personally don’t think they can do this because we have a copy of Lloyd Korn saying theres nothing wrong with a fansite. This will definitely not hold up in the court of law.

It’s very odd how our host was not contacted about this (as far as I know). My friend who hosts Maple-News on his hosting subscription did not receive an email from the host indicating that they had been contacted.
This is odd, no?
It almost seems like they didn’t even look at our site before accusing us of the above.

I think the:
-Slandering refers to some of the featured stories (Like the one about their new ads and them suing odinms)
-Telling people how to undermine the game is about you talking about the glitches they had like for the bigfoot glitch (Making it public knowledge is helping?)
-Copyrighted images are ones like on the featured news banner (you have a lot there)
-Collecting money is when you were taking donations and are currently using google ads. Not sure if you are still taking donations, but you did so it doesn’t really matter if you took them down or not. Just because you kill a guy and a couple years go by doesn’t mean you can’t go to jail for it.
Those are just guesses though. Not all of them are very good reasons (copyrighted images are the only decent one), but since when does someone need a good reason to sue someone else? (Not saying you will be sued, it is possible though)

We never received a single donation, besides $3 from a friend months ago.
The glitch was also on NEXON forums and Sleepywood.net which gets way more views than Maple-News.
We haven’t received a cent from google ads to date.

- Unbiased opinions and stories are perfectly legal. Deal with it. We’re not in the fucking holocaust where freedom of speech was illegal.
- The bigfoot glitch was patched; We’re not telling anyone HOW to do it; We’re giving people who know about it a story. If undermining and cheating on the game is their issue; Sue fucking cheatengine. Oh wait; they can’t. They’re not breaking the law either. We’re doing MUCH less.

Nexon isn’t helping themselves by eliminating their fanbase.
-Money collection; Doesn’t harm them at all, it actually helps them, because most ads have advertisements for THEIR GAME. Plus a ton of more threatening sites have donations and google ads.
You can’t go to jail for having content in the past, because it doesn’t affect them now.
People cannot go to jail, or get sued for opening a private server until warned and requested to take it down, same applies for images.
We haven’t even confirmed if this shit is real, But if it is; We don’t need to shut down the site; just remove images.
In my opinion, if Nexon is having a financial issue:
-Don’t waste time and money suing fansites for images. It’ll give a negative reputation among the fanbase, and lose more money. (Although this may be rather biased?)
-Sue ACTUAL threats. Hacking sites, Private servers, etc.
-Spend the money on developing the game and making your files less opened and shit, so they’re not as hackable and accessible for users.

They are nearly the same.
The only real difference is the paragraph about cracking .wz files.

It could definitely be a hoax which I personally believe it is. The only way to find out is to call them or at least email them. I think we’re handling this well since we’re not shutting down without talking to them.

As Tribunal said, we are handling this as if it is real…but we are not “shutting down” until we speak with Mr. Korn to confirm the legitimacy of this email.
If this is in fact a hoax, then the hope of the person is that we will close. Indeed our competitors have done something similar to us before, but not on this scale. Again, at this point we’re treating this as legitimate.

There is nothing immature about building a anonymous mailer. It is called LEARNING.
I’m a web designer/scripter (if you doubt that you could even ask savage probably to confirm) and you don’t learn things by just reading a block of text.
You have to put the things you know into actual practice. Building an anon mailer was simple, yes, but gave me more info on normal email headers and how the mail functions of php work.
It is like saying Albert Einstein is “immature” because he helped with the atomic bomb (he gave theories on how to do it and is the one who got the US to start working on it). It’s just plain stupid.
